Get Rid of Home Clutter

by Pamplemousse

Our interior spaces that surround us reflect who we are, where we’ve been, and who’s gifted us with something special. We’re so inundated with the need for the new, the latest and best. In our Western society we surround ourselves with as much as possible; equating a minimal interior to lacking in substance. As we rush out to find such newer treasures, we are left with decor and household items collecting dust.

We need to understand the difference between storage and clutter. Items being stored should be considered our most loved and valued treasures. If you haven’t needed or used it and even forgot it was there, it’s time to toss it.

Storage is defined as any area cupboard, room, modular unit or space that can house an item appropriately, which you access to on a regular basis. Clutter relates to the forgotten items that are not being used and collecting dust – a distant memory. These items should be donated whenever possible. If any of these items are in need of repair they should be fixed as soon as possible. If you haven’t gotten to fixing in the past you probably never will.

Clutter creates disorder and overcrowding. These are the areas of chaos that make us cringe even at the thought of them such as: your counter, desk, cupboards, basement, garages, closets, yard, jewelery boxes, and of course even your car. Such chaos can affect us in how we deal with everyday situations causing burdens, stress, and negative stagnant energy. Undoubtedly we are connected to everything that surrounds us whether you believe it or not. We’re connected to them by emotional attachments and memories and this can be good or bad.

The things we accumulate end up piled in our closets and can grow to overwhelming proportions. Take a moment in your day and think of the areas in your home that are afflicted with chaos and see how it makes you feel. That’s your first step!

Next, set aside the time to evaluate the items in the area that is causing the most stress. Start small and select items that are of value are truly needed or wanted. As for the rest, pack them up to donate to a local charity. The sense of relief and accomplishment you’ll get from that is forever gratifying.

Your interior should be free flowing, welcoming and visually pleasing. Stagnant, cluttered interiors are uncomfortable. Your spaces, whatever they may be, should reflect an organized, healthy and nurturing environment. Note your opportunities and feelings once you’re clutter free.

Don’t confuse clearing clutter with a minimal life style. It’s also certainly not an excuse to throw everything out only to run and buy more things. By exercising restraint, you can let go of the hoarding mentality that’s lead you to keep everything that’s ever been purchased or given. It’s yours to do what you wish. Love it or leave it!!

Here are some tips for a clutter free lifestyle and interior

Ask yourself these vital questions:

  • Do I love it?
  • Do I need it? (Be totally honest)
  • How often to I use this? (Be realistic)
  • Will I fix what’s broken? If I haven’t done so yet, when?
  • Have I missed this? Will I?
  • Did you even know you had it?
  • Can I replace it?

Apply these questions to all the areas you are going to transform whether it’s clothing, food, toys, dishes, decor, and furniture.

Here are some clutter bug excuses to avoid:

  • It was a gift – I feel bad. (How often have you enjoyed it? It’s ok to let go!)
  • I may need it. (If you haven’t used it in the past 3-6 months chances are you wont.)
  • It was expensive …. (and ?)
  • I might miss it once it’s gone. (You’ll be more relieved than you thought.)
  • I’ll fix it on the weekend
  • I’m really busy.

Get past the excuses and you’re on your way to a clutter free interior.

Here are some storage solutions:

  • Sort items in boxes. Label them keep or toss
  • Define your storage areas, store what’s supposed to be stored there.
  • Dissect it again, go through it all again.
  • If it’s broken toss it, don’t hold back.
  • Store items in clear containers appropriate to where the item belongs.
  • Use modular units or closet hanging organizers
  • Basket, boxes, hampers storage units or shelving are useful
  • Seek the help of a professional organizer

Once you’ve clearly set out your intentions, put your newly stored items in the area it belongs to. That way you are minded of it and it doesn’t end up as clutter. So, start small, set your intentions and goals and what you want to accomplish. Ask yourself the vital questions, then create storage best to suit your needs.

It’s time you live in a clutter free interior, in style and comfort.
