Exterior Insulation

I just bought a house built in 1954 and am getting a new energy efficient furnace. The original windows, I will be replacing as well as the exterior siding. A friend of mine who has done home renos for a long time advises against exterior insulation. He talks of a vapour barrier, having too much moisture in the house that has no where to escape and the ramifications that this can cause(eg. mould). What is your view on this? home addition ice cold floor

The previous owner of my home knocked out part of the kitchen wall and added a solarium that juts out about 3 feet from the house and is about 6 feet wide this extension is about 2 feet above ground with a plywood floor separating this addition to the outdoors. I did install batt insulation in the crawl area but the kitchen remains cold at least 20 degrees colder than the rest of the house and walking on the floor is like walking on snow bare feet. So how do I get this area of the kitchen as warm as the rest of the house? I was thinking of adding floor heating. Can you tell me how to fix this before the next cold winter ? Clanging pipes

I just had a new heating system installed, Buderus boiler w/Carlin burner. Before installation I had clanging pipes that I thought may have been air in the system. New system clangs even more than before. Any suggestions as to the cause? Read our expert's answer »

My mom has an old 1955 Pioneer gas wall heater she is looking for parts for. I can't find Pioneer Heating in Los Angeles anywhere on the net. Can you suggest a place parts could be purchased in California? There is a parts # but barely legible -- it does end in 755. Read our expert's answer »
